Huntsville, Alabama, boasts the highest per capita income in the State of Alabama. The city is home to Cummings Research Park, the second largest research and technology park in the United States and fourth largest in the world. The park is the heart of the region’s dynamic and growing high-tech and aerospace industries. Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center are the region’s two largest employers. In addition, there are 57 Fortune 500 companies in Huntsville/Madison County. With the recent addition of the Hudson Alpha Institute, the area is becoming known for biotechnology advancements as well.
North Alabama is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, due in large part to the influx of jobs being created by the most recent Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) that is moving the US Army’s Missile Defense Agency to Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal. The projected BRAC growth is 19,700 jobs and an increase in population of 37,000 for the region. Combined with the corresponding contractor company growth to the area, the total is 33,000 jobs and a population of 70,000 mostly in Madison (Huntsville), Morgan (Decatur), and Limestone (Athens) Counties.
